Our Nan - a Poem by Jodie Barkes

Created by Reginald 3 years ago

Our beautiful Nan, you were like no other,
You were so much more than a wife, Nan, and mother,
Every day when you woke,
All you done was laugh and joke,
Being silly and your funny ways,
Always made all our days,
Never a dull second with you my love,
I bet you are all having a right laugh above.

Off to Dorset, you’d both go in the van,
You’d come back with the darkest tan,
A white mark on your feet which was once a flip flop,
or across your shoulders from your white vest top,
Are you coming home yet? I used to say,
Because we hated not seeing you, not for a single day.
Our early morning chats about the most pointless thing,
Now what I’d give for my phone to ring.

Our plates were always a mountain high,
“You’re growing lads” was the reason why,
Your lifelong aim was always to please,
Scones, cakes, and cauliflower cheese,
Plate stacked tall with the worlds best roast,
Or calling downstairs to order 3 eggs on toast,
A pinny tied around your waist,
Hot cheese straws for us to taste,
A tea towel always chucked over your shoulder,
Your food just got better as you got older.

A breakfast in town was always first,
Then a quick stop in Bon Marche to lighten your purse,
Whether it was jetwashing the drive or getting a skip,
Or us trying to pay and giving us lip,
Putting the world to rights over a cup of tea,
Or driving to Weymouth saying “eyeball the sea”
Your belly laughs that would turn to tears
Or your knuckles turning white when pop changed gears.

A headache or cold you’d blame on the weather,
Having a problem? Let’s deal with it together,
Telling those sales calls where to go,
Bringing you our trousers for you to sew,
You asked us for the 50 shades books for goodness sake,
You should have just stuck with your chat or take a break,
“Bring your ironing over” you’d always say,
And it was all freshly done by the end of the day.

A week off to paint was your idea of a break,
Doing the housework or baking a cake,
Blonding you up with the highlighting cap,
Or cutting your hair while you take a nap,
Hello columbo, you would always say,
If we’d already called you 99 times that day,
Taking us here and taking us there,
As long as we were safe, you wouldn’t care.

It was clear to see that Pop was your life,
And that you made the most amazing wife,
To Stacey and Tara, there just was no other,
In the whole universe, you were the most special mother,
To me, Sash and Harry you were simply the best,
And just to have you, we were truly blessed,
Amelia and Wyatt, to them you meant so much,
Your love would consume them with just a touch.

You were always at the end of the phone,
And your cosy cuddles so warm and at home
Forever a promise from us to you,
Keep doing you proud is what we will do,
We’ll stay brave, kind, and strong,
Always admit when we are wrong,
We’ll be selfless, loving, and always good,
Just like you always would.

We’ll live our life full of laughter and fun,
We’ll learn to walk and not to run,
Because we know now that life is not a race,
But one we should enjoy at a slower pace.
Everything we know now is because of you,
Because to our family, you are the glue.
You are our queen and number one,
To us, you are simply second to none.

Please watch down on us from time to time,
And tell us when we’ve moved out of line,
We’ll dress in colours so colourful and bright,
We’ll wish you good morning and kiss you good night.
We all love you so much,
And how much we long your touch,
But just for now we’ll await and stand,
Until the day we can hold your hand.
